Since one of my roomies has failed to respond to messages, and has left no alternative way to communicate (for the last 10 days!) in spite of having my cell number, I'm having to assume that they're no longer interested in rooming with me. Therefore I have space for one or two in my room at the Marriott Marquis. Cost for one is $278...two would require a recalculation. You may contact me here on livejournal, or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org .
My dad was the epitome of a stubborn missouri mule, but with a kind heart. He was an airforce retiree with 20 years service under his belt. He knew his old cars, airplanes, and country music, and knew that pushing his daughters on swings higher than his head delighted them to no end, even as it dismayed his wife. He loved his pink panther cartoons and would cackle like a mad thing at the Three Stooges. He turned 78 on July 6th....He passed away early in the morning hours on 07-14-14 in his sleep...The paramedics say it was probably a silent heart attack.
I know intellectually that there was nothing I could have done...There was no noise outside of routine, and no warning other than the poor health of his lungs. But my mind won't stop playing back scenes, making me wonder if I'd only gone to check on him, beyond the casual glance when I got home around midnight, and saw him moving about as he usually did. The doctor said his illnesses would have killed him years ago, without me taking care of him...That I was a good daughter. I don't feel like one....I feel like I should have done more, in spite of what others say, and knowing in my mind that there was nothing. He was already cooling when I found him.
When I wake in the morning, I'll try to start putting back the pieces of my shattered heart. Maybe things will begin to make sense then.
So, probably going back to the doctor with dad today...He had an upper GI barium swallow proceedure Friday...Developed a hard lump in his side Saturday. Called Doc's office and they said to try milk of magnesia to get things going...well, it's working, but the hard lump is still there. Waiting for GI doc to call me back and see if he needs to come into the ER...I'm beginning to think that all the twisting and turning they had him doing may have strained something, and popped a hernia out or something.
I should be in bed now...So tired. FML

!Take 10 minutes to make a list of books that have been important to you at some time in your life. Don't stop to think, justify, add authors, or make notes. When 10 minutes are up, you can reorder the list and add additional information.
Readers can ask questions about the books on the list. For brevity's sake, a lot of these will be listed by series, rather than as individual books.( My listCollapse )
I started this petition to repeal a house resolution that made it against the rules for any representative, other than the majority leader, introduce legislation to reopen the U.S. government. Most of the house, both democrats and republicans have expressed a desire to have introduced and to vote on what is being called a "Clean" CR, and reopen the government, but are prevented by this rule change. I propose that they simply fix what they unknowingly broke, and move forward, rather than being held in permanent stalemate by a rules change. Here's a video explaining it...bear with the legalese in it!
You can sign the petition Right here, just click!

Snowmageddon, snownami, apocalypse snow! That means 11 inches and still falling. For here, that means that the whole city is shut down...even the fast food restaurants are closed! Wake me up when this crap thaws...I'm hibernating until futher notice!

ACTA in a Nutshell –
What is ACTA? ACTA is the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. A new intellectual property enforcement treaty being negotiated by the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan, with Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada recently announcing that they will join in as well.
Why should you care about ACTA? Initial reports indicate that the treaty will have a very broad scope and will involve new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology.”
What is the goal of ACTA? Reportedly the goal is to create new legal standards of intellectual property enforcement, as well as increased international cooperation, an example of which would be an increase in information sharing between signatory countries’ law enforcement agencies.

My dad's in the hospital...Yesterday sometime during the night, he collapsed a lung. He came downstairs pale, sweating, and barely able to breathe, complaning of chest pains. Chest pains of any type get an ambulance call in my house...He's doing okay now, or at least as okay as a man with a chest tube in can be...Once they got the lung reinflated, he started doing better almost immediately. Gave me a hell of a scare though. Doc's say it sometimes happens with COPD.

at Mississippi Personhood Amendment
Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting
no attention in the mainstream media.
Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.
Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.Jackson Women's Health Organization
is the only place women can get abortions in the entire
state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states
What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.
The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.
So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.
If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.
What to do?
- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi
is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos
also has a thorough story on it.
- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.
- You can contact the Democratic National Committee
to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.
- Like this Facebook page
to help spread awareness.
